Eastside Residence

After: A variety of local, native species make this backyard landscape a treat for the residents and resident wildlife. Hardscape was reduced significantly, and the wall to the south was replaced with a view fence to welcome the desert in.

Location: Tucson, Arizona

Year Complete: 2022

Project Lead: Wilder Landscape Architects

Client: Private

When our Clients purchased this eastside residence, the walled yard around the house was largely devoid of vegetation. Concrete pavers dominated the backyard, and a continuous wall interrupted views to the south.

Goals for the project included bringing the desert inside the wall; encouraging birds and butterflies; and highlighting the views towards the mountains.

Just a few years after installation, the plants have established, birds, butterflies, moths and lizards are abundant, and the home feels much more at home in its surroundings.

A small pondless water feature provides water for birds and a delightful sound for patio users.

The goal of the landscape design is to connect the residents with nature right where they live. No having to trek into the desert to appreciate the beauty of the seasons.

Hardscape has been completed and planting is about to go in.

Before: When the current owners purchased the home, the walled backyard was primarily hardscape.
